Homosexuality in the Priesthood?

by Fr. Jeffrey Robideau

11-08-05
Pray for the Pope as we await the release of the letter on weather homosexuals will be allowed in the
seminaries or not.

This has little to do with  recent scandals. The fact is the Church has always bar
red homosexuals from the
seminary and priesthood. It is only recently that there has been any effort to allow men with such an affliction
into the priesthood.

The Church has the right and duty to bar homosexuals from the priesthood as She follows the Natural Law.

Few sins merit the label "abomination," but homosexuality is one. We know that priests as humans are not
perfect, that is not what we are looking for, but to have a priest who suffers from an abominable vice in his
life, that is not right.

It is enough for a person to deal with ordinary vice and temptation. Dealing with an abomination is a terrible
burden, one no one should have to suffer through, but they do and we pray for their success and holiness.

We can not fall in to the trap of false charity and say that they suffer enough, that if they feel called to the
priesthood, we somehow have to let them in. This is not charity. This is a violation of God's law. And we
would be guilty of sin.

We can not say that this is a form of unjust discrimination. Discrimination is part of everyday life, and it is
good. To discriminate simply means that we choose one thing over another according to some set of criteria.
Unjust discrimination is to discriminate according to unjust criteria. Homosexuality is a legitimate criteria to
discriminate when it comes to the priesthood and so is not unjust discrimination. You can not have a man
who suffers from an abomination in the priesthood.

In conclusion, I have no ill will, animosity or fear of homosexuals. I only want what is best for the Church, her
people, society and the homosexual himself. I pray for them as they have made it known that they suffer with
their disordered desire. I hope for only the best for them and for all, but the priesthood just simply is not for
them at this point in their lives.
